It is the season of rains and typhoons again in the Philippines. And most of us become busy preparing our homes as the wet season comes in.
The Philippines has only two seasons: wet and dry. But because of the fated phenomenon of climate change, the weather has become unpredictable. The extreme changes in weather can greatly affect the strength of your house.
A shelter is the most important basic need you should have especially during the rainy season. We all need protection from the rains and typhoons. But how can your own homes protect you and your family if they are not properly maintained and cared for?
It is important to take some safety precautions to ensure that your homes give you the protection you need. Here are some tips you should consider.
• Check your roof. Look for any damage and check for areas vulnerable to leaks and repair these immediately.
• Inspect and clear drains and gutters. Remove any branches, leaves or other objects that can block the drainage. Clogged drainage can cause flooding, wall and window leaks that may later on damage your house.
• Make your windows and doors waterproof. Unsealed windowsills and doors are vulnerable to leaks during heavy rains. Seal your windows and door cracks with waterproof sealer or rubber. This will help to prevent any rain from leaking through the cracks and potentially damaging objects in your home.
• Secure anything that could potentially fly, slide, fall, tip, or bend from strong winds. Keep trashcans, monoblock chairs or any other objects inside the house. Check roofs and secure them well making sure they will not fly off by strong winds.
• Trim overgrown plants and trees. Overgrown branches can pose danger to your household in harsh winds and rain. Remove any unstable plants and prune back any flyaway branches.
• Secure emergency and first-aid kits in accessible areas in the house.
